SERVICE INTRODUCTION

Professional MOT Testing in Bromley Since 2009
Your vehicle's annual MOT test is a legal requirement for cars over three years old, ensuring your vehicle meets the minimum safety and environmental standards set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). At Sanu Motors, we've been providing trusted automotive services to the Bromley community for over 16 years, and we're proud to offer professional MOT testing at our Southlands Road workshop.

Our DVSA-approved testing facility conducts thorough, honest examinations covering over 600 individual checks on your vehicle. We don't use MOT testing as a way to generate unnecessary repair work – we provide transparent results, clear explanations in plain English, and honest advice about what needs attention now and what can wait.

Whether your vehicle passes or fails, you'll receive a complete written report detailing exactly what was checked, what passed, what failed, and any advisory items that are approaching the failure threshold. If repairs are needed, our fully equipped workshop can handle them immediately, often completing work the same day so you can get back on the road quickly.

Why Choose Sanu Motors for Your MOT Test

DVSA-Approved Testing Facility
Our Southlands Road workshop is fully approved by the DVSA to conduct official MOT tests. All testing equipment is regularly calibrated and maintained to DVSA standards, ensuring accurate, reliable results every time.

Honest, Transparent Testing
We don't inflate repair recommendations or use scare tactics. If your vehicle fails, we'll explain exactly why, show you the issue where possible, and provide a written quote for repairs with no obligation. You're free to have repairs done elsewhere if you prefer.

Same-Day Repair Capability
Unlike standalone MOT testing stations, Sanu Motors is a fully equipped workshop. If your vehicle fails its MOT, we can often complete repairs the same day, saving you time and the inconvenience of multiple visits.

Comprehensive Workshop Services
Beyond MOT testing, we offer complete vehicle servicing, diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance. This means we understand your vehicle's full history and can provide ongoing care that keeps it running reliably.

Convenient Location in Bromley
Our Southlands Road workshop is easily accessible from all areas of Bromley, Beckenham, Bickley, Chislehurst, and surrounding South East London postcodes. We're located at the **No. 151 Southlands Rd, Bromley BR2 9QZ.

WHAT'S CHECKED DURING YOUR MOT TEST

Comprehensive 600+ Point Inspection
The MOT test is a thorough examination of your vehicle's safety-critical systems and environmental performance. Our DVSA-approved testers check over 600 individual items across the following key areas:

Lights and Electrical Systems
All exterior lighting is tested including headlights (main beam and dipped beam), sidelights, indicators, brake lights, hazard lights, rear fog lights, reverse lights, and number plate lights. We check for correct operation, brightness, color, and alignment. Dashboard warning lights are also checked – any warning light that remains illuminated after engine startup (such as engine management light, ABS warning, airbag warning, or DPF warning) will cause an MOT failure.

Brakes
Brake performance is measured on a roller brake tester to ensure your vehicle can stop safely and that braking force is balanced between left and right wheels. We check brake pad thickness, disc condition, brake fluid level, brake pipe condition, handbrake operation and effectiveness, and the overall condition of the braking system including calipers and flexible hoses.

Tyres and Wheels
All tyres are inspected for tread depth (legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre), sidewall condition, cuts, bulges, and general wear. We check that tyres are suitable for the vehicle, correctly inflated, and that matching tyres are fitted to the same axle. Wheels are checked for security, condition, and any damage that could affect safety.

Steering and Suspension
The entire steering system is examined including the steering wheel, steering column, steering rack or box, power steering operation, and all linkages. Suspension components are checked for wear, damage, and security including shock absorbers, coil springs, suspension bushes, ball joints, track rod ends, and anti-roll bars.

Windscreen, Wipers, and Washers
The windscreen is examined for chips and cracks. Any damage larger than 10mm in the driver's direct line of vision (Zone A – the area swept by the wipers directly in front of the driver) will cause a failure. Cracks larger than 40mm anywhere else on the windscreen also fail. Wiper blades must clear the screen effectively, and the washer system must work correctly.

Exhaust System and Emissions
The complete exhaust system is checked for security, condition, excessive corrosion, and any leaks. For petrol vehicles, exhaust emissions are measured for carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) levels. Diesel vehicles undergo a smoke opacity test. Excessive emissions in any category will cause a failure. The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is checked for presence and condition on diesel vehicles – missing or tampered DPFs cause automatic failure.

Body, Structure, and Corrosion
The vehicle's body and structural components are examined for excessive corrosion, damage, or sharp edges that could cause injury. Doors, bonnet, and boot must open, close, and latch securely. Any corrosion that affects structural integrity or creates a safety hazard will cause a failure.

Fuel System
The fuel tank, fuel cap, and fuel filler are checked for security and leaks. The fuel cap must seal properly to prevent fuel vapour emissions.

Seats and Seatbelts
All seats must be secure and the seatbacks must lock in the upright position. All compulsory seatbelts must be present, secure, in good condition, and function correctly. Seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters are checked where fitted.

Mirrors
All required mirrors must be present, secure, and provide adequate view to the rear. Mirrors must not be damaged or obscured.

Horn
The horn must be present, operate correctly, and be audible.

Vehicle Registration Plates
Number plates must be secure, clean, legible, and in the correct format. Characters must meet size and spacing requirements.

VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
The VIN must be clearly visible and match the vehicle registration documents.

What to Bring for Your MOT

  • Vehicle registration document (V5C) or registration number

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. How long does an MOT test take?
A standard car MOT test takes approximately 45-60 minutes at our Southlands Road facility. This can vary slightly depending on your vehicle type and condition. We ask you to allow up to 90 minutes in case minor adjustments or checks require additional time. If repairs are needed following a failure, completion time depends on the nature of the work required.
  2. What do I need to bring for my MOT test?
You just need your vehicle registration number. You don't need to bring your V5C registration document or any other paperwork. If you have your current MOT certificate, bringing it can be helpful for our records, but it's not essential. MOT certificates are now electronic and stored in the DVSA database, so we can access your vehicle's MOT history using just your registration number.
  3. Can I drive my car if it fails the MOT?
It depends on the defects found and whether your current MOT certificate is still valid. If your existing MOT has expired and the vehicle fails, you cannot drive it on public roads except directly to a pre-arranged MOT retest appointment or to a garage for repairs. If your current MOT is still valid but the vehicle fails with major defects (not dangerous defects), you may continue driving until the current certificate expires, though we don't recommend this for safety reasons. If dangerous defects are listed, you must not drive the vehicle at all until repairs are completed.
  4. How early can I book my MOT before it expires?
You can take your MOT test up to one calendar month (minus one day) before the current certificate expires without losing any time. For example, if your current MOT expires on 15th May, you can test as early as 16th April. The new 12-month certificate will run from the original expiry date (15th May), not from the test date, so you don't lose any remaining time. This gives you flexibility to book at a convenient time and address any failures before your current MOT expires.
  5. What is an MOT advisory and should I worry about it?
An MOT advisory is a note from the tester about an item that has passed the test today but is showing wear and approaching the failure threshold. Advisories don't affect your MOT pass – you still receive a valid 12-month certificate. However, advisories are important because they highlight components that should be monitored and will likely need attention before your next MOT. Common advisories include brake pads with 3-4mm remaining (legal limit is 1.5mm), tyres approaching the legal tread depth, early-stage corrosion, or minor oil leaks. Addressing advisories promptly can prevent MOT failure next year and avoid more expensive repairs later.
  6. Will my dashboard warning lights cause MOT failure?
Yes. Any warning light that remains illuminated after engine startup will cause automatic MOT failure. This includes the engine management light (also called check engine light or MIL), ABS warning light, airbag/SRS warning light, DPF warning light, and brake system warning light. If any warning lights are showing on your dashboard, have them diagnosed and repaired before your MOT test. We offer comprehensive diagnostic services to identify the cause of warning lights and provide written repair quotes.
  7. Do you offer MOT retests if my vehicle fails?
Yes. If your vehicle fails its MOT at Sanu Motors and we carry out the repairs, we coordinate the retest on your behalf. DVSA regulations allow for partial retests where only the failed items are checked again, provided the retest is conducted within a specific timeframe. We handle all the retest coordination as part of our repair service, ensuring you receive your MOT certificate as quickly as possible.
  8. Can I wait at your workshop during the MOT test?
While we don't have a dedicated customer waiting area, you're welcome to wait near the workshop during your MOT test if you prefer. The test typically takes 45-60 minutes. Alternatively, our Southlands Road location is within walking distance of local shops and cafes if you'd prefer to grab a coffee while you wait. Many customers choose to drop their vehicle off and return later, or we can contact you by phone when the test is complete.
  9. What happens if I miss my MOT expiry date?
Driving without a valid MOT certificate is illegal (unless you're driving directly to a pre-booked MOT test appointment). You can be fined up to £1,000, and your insurance may be invalidated. If you've missed your MOT expiry date, book a test as soon as possible. You can legally drive your vehicle directly to our workshop for the test even if the MOT has expired, but you cannot use the vehicle for any other purpose until it passes and receives a new certificate.
  10. Do you test all vehicle types?
We test all standard cars, vans, and light commercial vehicles (Class 4 and Class 7 vehicles). This covers most private vehicles and commercial vans. We test petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles. If you have a specialist vehicle or you're unsure whether we can test your vehicle type, call us on 07856 896899 and we'll confirm immediately.
